The first gold discovery at Gold Hill was 1824 on the farm of Andrew Troutman.  By 1842-43, the rich veins at the Barnhardt and Earnhardt (later known as the Randolph) Mines spawned the Carolina Gold Rush.  Gold Hill became known as the richest mining property east of the Mississippi.

Today Gold Hill is home to a park, trails with historic stops to see and a village of merchants for shopping and dining.
